Since I've got a lot of spare (retirement) time on my hands I offered to do some film transferring for friends. They sent me a bag of film reels and a super 8 projector.
And they have little memory of where all this stuff came from. There are Kodak reels (nearly 3") which would fit on a 5/16" spindle ... which means they are neither 8mm nor super-8 ... or ... they need to be moved to the proper reel before they can be viewed. WHAT ARE THESE THINGS??

Check www.moviestuff.com for transfer that they can save the memories. Try you best to get it on the reel to view to see what they want to transfer thru moviestuff's telecine or you can buy his lens that you can use your super 8mm projector to transfer on your 3ccd camcorder either way for fine transfer. Have fun with it. Jerome, deaf filmmaker

I measured some of my regular and Super 8mm spools, nothing really precise, I just used a ruler.
My 8mm spools have a 5/16 inch diameter hub. My Super 8mm spools have a 1/2 inch diameter hub. I don't know what size hubs are used for single 8.
If your spools have hubs measuring 5/16 inches, then I'd say they must be regular 8mm spools.

Thanks for all the replies to my query.
Monobath, your answer made me go back and examine my Keystone 250 editor. I didn't realize there was a detachable sleeve on the spindles.
I took one off and "vwala" (yes, I can't spell French), I discovered I'm working with regular 8mm (5/16th") film.

I think it's spelled "viola" and pronounced "well-ah".
